What is Port Mourant?
Port Mourant is the name of a famous still in Guyana: a wooden double pot still, built for the Port Mourant distillery and now one of the last of its kind in the world. Rum made on it is known for weight, depth and an unmistakable smoky, molasses-rich profile. Among rum collectors, “PM” is one of the most respected marques there is.
About the Rare Collection
El Dorado’s Rare Collection is a range of single-marque aged rums, each distilled on one of the heritage stills of Demerara Distillers. This 1999 Port Mourant was aged in former bourbon barrels and bottled as a limited release at 61.4% ABV.
Tasting notes
- Aroma: Pot still molasses, dark chocolate and toffee, with smoke, aged tobacco, coffee, mild anise and vanilla, and a hint of sweet cut grass
- Palate: Smoke, charred wood, tobacco and a peaty note, with mild licorice and fruity molasses
- Body: Medium to heavy
- Finish: Charred wood and mild licorice
Expect a dry, powerful rum rather than a sweet one. The molasses character is there, but it is balanced by smoke, wood and spice.
How to enjoy it
- Pour a small measure into a tulip glass.
- Let it breathe. A few minutes in the glass helps the strength settle and the aromas open up.
- Add water drop by drop. This softens the alcohol and brings out the fruit and spice.
- Pair it with dark chocolate, roasted coffee, a good cigar or aged cheese.
