An icon of Speyside

An icon of Speyside

Few distilleries are as recognisable as Glenfiddich. The stag on the label is known around the world, and the 18 Year Old is one of the whiskies that built the distillery’s reputation for quality. If you want to see what long maturation adds to a single malt, this is a classic place to start.

The story behind the name

Glenfiddich sits on the banks of the river Fiddich in Dufftown, in the Speyside region of Scotland. The name is commonly translated as “valley of the deer”, because the river flows through a valley once inhabited by deer. That is why a stag appears on the logo.

What is Small Batch Reserve?

The 18 Year Old Small Batch Reserve is made in small batches, and some of the whisky in this version is believed to be even older than the label suggests. That extra age adds depth and polish to the final blend, and helps explain its plush texture and well-rounded finish.

Tasting notes

  • Nose: Honey, cloves and vanilla-laced malt
  • Palate: Dried apricots and spices, with soft peat adding depth to the roasted malt, and a plush mouthfeel
  • Finish: Clean and balanced, with dried fruit and herbs

The soft peat is worth noting. Speyside whisky is usually associated with fruit and sweetness, so a gentle trace of peat adds a little extra complexity without turning it into a smoky dram.

How to enjoy it

  1. Start neat. Sip it slowly from a tulip glass to appreciate the layers.
  2. Try a few drops of water. This opens up the honey, apricot and spice.
  3. Pair it. Dark chocolate, roasted nuts, mature cheese and apricot tart all suit its flavours.

Who is it for?

  • Newcomers to older whisky who want a smooth, approachable 18-year-old
  • Speyside fans who enjoy honeyed, fruity malts
  • Gift buyers looking for an instantly recognisable bottle with a strong age statement
  • Collectors building a line-up of Glenfiddich expressions
