A Springbank worth hunting for

A Springbank worth hunting for

Springbank is one of the most respected names in Scotch whisky, and its bottles are not easy to find. Springbank 2004 Gaja Barolo 9 Year Old is a limited bottling that shows the distillery’s willingness to experiment, with a finish in casks from one of Italy’s most celebrated wine producers.

The Springbank story

Springbank has been proudly owned and run by the Mitchell family since 1837. After a brief mothballing between 1979 and 1987, the distillery recommitted to its single malt focus and became one of the most revered distilleries in Scotland.

What makes it special is how it works. Springbank is one of the few distilleries that performs every step of whisky production on site, from malting to bottling. It is also known for three distinct and highly sought-after single malts.

About this bottling

This expression was distilled in 2004 and bottled in October 2013. Its maturation had two stages:

  • 4 years in refill bourbon casks
  • 5 years in fresh Gaja Barolo casks, from the Italian wine producer Angelo Gaja

It was bottled at 54.7% ABV as a limited release of 11,000 bottles, free from chill filtration and artificial colouring.

Why Barolo casks?

Barolo is one of Italy’s best-known red wines, made from the Nebbiolo grape. Maturing whisky in a cask that held it adds colour and a wine influence on top of the distillery’s own character. Because the casks were fresh, the Barolo influence is meaningful, not just a hint.

Who is it for?

  • Springbank collectors who want a sought-after 2013 release
  • Wine cask fans curious about Barolo finishes
  • Campbeltown enthusiasts exploring the region’s whisky
  • Special occasions, for anyone who appreciates a rare and historic bottle
